Two of the six are gone. That matters if you are reading an old profile of an LA actor, because “Ovation Award winner” is a real credit that stopped being awarded in 2021, and “LA Weekly Theater Award winner” stopped in 2014.
What the Ovation Awards actually were
The Ovations began in 1989 and were the only peer-judged theatre awards in Los Angeles. Winners were picked by a voting committee of LA-area theatre professionals who applied for the role each year, not by critics and not by the public. That peer-judged structure was the whole point, and it is the thing no current LA award replaced.
The awards spanned roughly 26 to 33 categories depending on the year, covering production, performance, direction, design, choreography, and writing. Most categories were split between larger and smaller theatres, so an intimate 60-seat house was not competing directly against a touring Broadway production at the Ahmanson. To qualify, a production generally needed union representation or a prior Ovation nomination, plus a minimum run of ten performances for intimate venues and six for larger ones.
Ceremonies moved around town, including the Ahmanson and the Orpheum. Hosts over the years included Nathan Lane, Lily Tomlin, and Neil Patrick Harris. For a regional theatre award, that is a serious guest list, and it tells you how much weight the Ovations carried locally.
Why the Ovation Awards ended
The short story you will read most places is that the 2021 virtual ceremony misidentified an Asian American nominee and the organisation collapsed over it. That is true but incomplete, and the fuller version is more useful.
What happened at the ceremony. At the March 30, 2021 virtual ceremony, nominee Jully Lee had her name mispronounced and a photo of a different Asian actress shown in her place. She was not the only error. Other performers were misidentified too, including a Black actor shown as a white actor, and Four Larks had a co-production credit erased.
Why it was fatal. LA STAGE Alliance had furloughed its entire staff in June 2020 and never rehired them, so there was no institutional memory left to vet nominees. Theatres had also spent years asking for changes that never came, including recognition for co-productions, which East West Players had reportedly been pushing for over five years. The organisation was widely seen as absent during the pandemic and during the equity conversations that followed George Floyd’s death in 2020. Many theatres had already begun forming smaller alliances of their own.
How it ended. Theatre companies revoked their memberships within days, including the Geffen Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, and Deaf West Theatre. Counts vary by source: Deadline reported more than 25 of the Alliance’s roughly 150 member companies, while other outlets put the number above forty. On April 5, 2021, facing that exodus on top of existing financial and organisational problems, the Board of Governors voted unanimously to cease all operations, effective immediately. LA STAGE Alliance had existed for 46 years, originally as Theatre L.A.
So the honest verdict: the ceremony errors were the trigger, not the cause. An organisation with staff, funding, and the trust of its members survives a bad broadcast. This one had already lost all three.
The awards worth following now
LA Drama Critics Circle. Founded in 1969, this is the closest thing to a successor in prestige, though it is critic-judged rather than peer-judged. Its 2025 awards were handed out at a reception on April 13, 2026. Winners for Best Production went to Cambodian Rock Band at East West Players, Evanston Salt Costs Climbing at Rogue Machine Theatre, and Some Like It Hot at the Hollywood Pantages. The Circle also gives named honours including the Gordon Davidson Award and the Margaret Harford Award.
Stage Raw Theater Awards. The most useful award in town if you care about small theatre. Stage Raw reviewed more than 300 productions across five counties in 2025, and its 2026 awards party was held May 4 at Sassafras Saloon in Hollywood. NAACP Theatre Awards. Produced by the NAACP Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch, the 31st edition took place June 29, 2026 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, with Delroy Lindo receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.
BroadwayWorld Los Angeles Awards. Reader-voted rather than judged, covering regional and touring productions. Treat it as a popularity signal rather than a critical one. The 2025 winners were announced in January 2026.
How to actually use awards to pick a show
Awards are a decent filter and a terrible rule. A few honest notes from using them:
- LADCC and Stage Raw point you at small theatre you would never find otherwise. That is their real value. The big touring musicals do not need help being noticed.
- An award is about a production, not a venue. A theatre that won three years ago tells you nothing about what is on stage next Tuesday. Check what’s on right now instead.
- Award season and performance season do not line up. LADCC honours the previous calendar year in April, so a winning production has often already closed. Use the winners list to learn which companies are consistently good, then follow those companies.
