About

The Hollywood Pantages sits right on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, and it is where most of Los Angeles sees Broadway. Since it opened in 1930, this Art Deco landmark has been a movie palace, an Academy Awards host, and now the city’s home for the biggest touring musicals, from Wicked and The Lion King to Hamilton and The Book of Mormon. If a major show is on a national tour, chances are it plays the Pantages when it reaches LA.

What to expect inside

The Pantages feels grand without feeling cavernous. Its 2,703 seats are split across two levels, the Orchestra and the Mezzanine, with no separate balcony, so even the upper rows stay reasonably close to the stage. The restored 1930s interior, all gilded ceilings and clean Art Deco lines, is part of the night out, so give yourself a few minutes to look up before the house lights drop. For a closer look at where to sit, see our guide to the best seats at the Pantages, or jump to the seating chart below.

Planning your visit

Doors usually open 60 to 90 minutes before curtain, and there is a security check on the way in, so plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. The theatre is one block from the Metro B Line at Hollywood/Vine, which is the easiest way to skip traffic and parking altogether. If you would rather drive, here is the full rundown on parking near the Pantages and how to beat the post-show traffic. To turn the evening into a proper night out, line up dinner before the show at one of the many spots within walking distance, mapped in the restaurants nearby section.

Getting tickets, and paying less for them

A single seat to a hot tour can run well past $200, but you rarely have to pay top dollar at the Pantages. The theatre runs a digital lottery through the Broadway in Hollywood app and releases $40 rush tickets at the box office two hours before each performance. We walk through every option, including lottery timing, rush, and the apps worth keeping, in our guide to cheap LA theatre tickets. You can see what is on stage right now in the upcoming shows list above.

Whether it is your first touring musical or your fiftieth, the Pantages is the centerpiece of the LA theatre scene. Browse all our LA venue guides when you are ready to plan the next one.

History

The Hollywood Pantages Theatre opened on June 4, 1930, as the last movie palace built in Hollywood during the golden age of cinema and the last venue erected by vaudeville circuit owner Alexander Pantages. Designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca, it was originally intended for vaudeville acts and motion pictures, and its opening night featured the film “The Florodora Girl” starring Marion Davies and a stage production. During the Great Depression, it was sold to Fox West Coast Theatres in 1932 and renamed the Fox-Pantages. In 1949, Howard Hughes purchased it under RKO Pictures, renaming it the RKO Pantages, and it hosted the Academy Awards from 1950 to 1960. A 1959 renovation modernized the interior, and ownership changed to Pacific Theatres in 1967 and the Nederlander Organization in 1977, leading to its transformation into a live theatre venue. In 2000, a $10.8 million renovation restored its 1930s Art Deco opulence and added modern features. Since then, it has hosted major Broadway productions like “The Lion King,” “Wicked,” and “The Book of Mormon.”
