Since 2003 it has anchored downtown’s arts scene, with the warm wood interior wrapping the audience around the stage so closely that even the budget seats sound spectacular.

History

Walt Disney Concert Hall opened on October 23, 2003, after a long road that began with a $50 million gift from Lillian Disney in 1987 in memory of her husband Walt. Frank Gehry designed the now-iconic stainless-steel exterior, and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota shaped the warm, wood-lined interior, which is widely considered one of the best-sounding concert halls in the world. It is the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and it sits on Bunker Hill as part of the larger Music Center campus alongside the Ahmanson, the Mark Taper Forum, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Seating & Venue Layout

The hall seats 2,265 in a “vineyard” layout that wraps the audience around the stage, so there is no truly bad seat for sound. The main level is the Orchestra (split into Front Orchestra, Orchestra East, and Orchestra West), with the Terrace level rising behind and to the sides. The quirk worth knowing: the Orchestra View seats sit above and behind the orchestra, facing the conductor and the audience. You lose the “front of the stage” view, but the sound is excellent and these are often the cheapest seats in the house (the LA Phil regularly releases $20 Orchestra View tickets). For a first visit where you want the classic view, aim for Orchestra or the front of the Terrace.

  • 💰 Flat event rate runs about $10 on most performance evenings (weekdays from late afternoon, weekends all day). Non-event rates are by the quarter-hour, so the flat event rate is the deal.
  • 🚗 The 2nd Street side of the garage tends to drain faster than Hope Street after a concert, so park toward that exit if you can.
  • ♿ Accessible parking is available in the garage; arrive a little early and follow signage to the elevator banks.
  • 🅿️ The Music Center Garage across Grand Avenue is a backup if the WDCH garage fills, similar event pricing.
  • Metro B/D Line to Civic Center/Grand Park station, then about a 5-minute walk uphill.
  • Rideshare drop-off is easiest on Grand Avenue or 2nd Street; expect a slow crawl right after the show.
