About

Experience the grandeur of Hollywood’s golden age at the Orpheum Theatre, a magnificently restored 1926 movie palace in Downtown LA’s Broadway Historic District. This architectural gem hosts world-class concerts, comedy shows, film screenings, and special events in an intimate setting that has welcomed entertainment legends for nearly a century.

History

Opened on February 15, 1926, the Orpheum Theatre was designed by renowned architect G. Albert Lansburgh as the fourth and final Los Angeles venue for the prestigious Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Featuring a stunning Beaux Arts facade and ornate interior, the theatre originally seated 2,350 guests and became one of the crown jewels of Downtown LA’s Broadway theatre district. Throughout its golden age, the Orpheum hosted legendary performers including Judy Garland, Jack Benny, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington. In the 1960s, it embraced rock and roll, featuring icons like Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. After extensive $3 million renovations beginning in 1989, the Orpheum emerged as the most meticulously restored historic movie palace in Los Angeles. In 1993, it was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, and today continues to host concerts, comedy shows, film premieres, and special events while preserving its magnificent 1920s grandeur.

Seating & Venue Layout

Orpheum Theatre seating chart

The Orpheum Theatre features classic vaudeville-era seating across multiple levels with a current capacity of approximately 2,000 seats. The venue includes a spacious Orchestra level with 1,019 newly upholstered seats, offering excellent sightlines to the stage. The Balcony section is divided into Lower Balcony (146 seats) and Upper Balcony (781 seats), providing intimate views despite the venue’s size. Additionally, there are 30 seats in elegant side boxes that add to the theatre’s historic charm. The original 1926 configuration seated 2,350, but thoughtful renovations have prioritized comfort and optimal viewing angles. The auditorium’s design ensures that guests enjoy great acoustics and clear views from virtually any seat in the house, maintaining the intimate atmosphere that has made this venue beloved for nearly a century.
