About

Experience innovative and star-studded theater at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, Los Angeles. Since opening in 1995, this nonprofit venue has been a hub for world premieres, contemporary works, and classics featuring Tony, Emmy, and Oscar-winning talent. With intimate seating in two theaters, it offers wildly theatrical experiences that enrich the cultural landscape of LA.

History

Originally constructed in 1929 as a Masonic lodge in Westwood Village, the building served various purposes before becoming the Westwood Playhouse in the 1970s. In 1995, theater producer Gilbert Cates founded the Geffen Playhouse, named after philanthropist David Geffen who donated $5 million. A major renovation in 2005, costing $17 million, preserved the Spanish Revival architecture while modernizing the facility, adding the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. The Geffen has hosted numerous world premieres, including works by Neil LaBute and Donald Margulies, and features productions with high-profile actors like Annette Bening and Bryan Cranston.
