About

Experience world-class theater at the Ahmanson Theatre, part of The Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles. Since 1967, this premier venue has presented the best of Broadway, the West End, and unforgettable world premieres. With its flexible seating and state-of-the-art facilities, it continues to be a cornerstone of LA’s vibrant performing arts scene.

History

Opened on April 12, 1967, the Ahmanson Theatre was built as part of the Los Angeles Music Center complex. Named after philanthropist Howard F. Ahmanson Sr., founder of H.F. Ahmanson & Co., and his wife Caroline Leonetti Ahmanson, the theater was designed by architect Welton Becket in a modernist style. The venue’s inaugural performance featured Richard Kiley in “Man of La Mancha.” A major $17 million renovation in 1994 enhanced acoustics, improved sightlines, and allowed flexible seating configurations from 1,600 to 2,109 seats. The Ahmanson has hosted six world premieres of Neil Simon plays and works by renowned playwrights including Wendy Wasserstein, August Wilson, and Edward Albee. It was also home to “The Phantom of the Opera” from 1989 to 1993, starring Michael Crawford.

Seating & Venue Layout

Ahmanson Theatre seating chart

The Ahmanson Theatre features three levels of seating: Orchestra (988 seats), Mezzanine (606 seats including boxes), and Balcony (515 seats including boxes). The auditorium is designed wider than it is deep to create an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. The first 13 rows are arranged in continental style with no front-to-rear aisles. The 1994 renovation moved the mezzanine and balcony closer to the stage for improved sightlines. The flexible configuration allows the theater to transform from an intimate 1,600-seat venue to a full 2,109-seat theater for major Broadway musicals.
