Julio pens the weekly LA STAGE Insider column for @ This Stage Magazine, as well as the monthly LA STAGE History column. He is a recurring contributor to Written By (the monthly publication of the Writer’s Guild of America) and is the TeleVision columnist for Latin Heat Entertainment. On air, he hosts the weekly Arts in Review program for KPFK 90.7 FM. An active journalist for over 30 years, Julio’s articles and reviews have appeared in Los Angeles Times Magazine, Daily Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, L.A. Weekly, Stage Raw, Backstage West, Westways Magazine, and Drama-Logue Magazine, among others.

  • Pacific Resident Theatre, now in it’s 34th year, is offering The PRT Youth Conservatory, a new resource to children in the Los Angeles area, a full-time year-round program serving students up to 18 years of age, completely free of charge for all students. A variety of classes will be available for children in grades 1—12, including Acting/Storytelling, Puppetry, Improvisation, Acting and Shakespeare. The work is made possible in part by a grant from the Mose J. and Sylvia Dilman Firestone Charitable Trust. Registration is open now fort the spring sessions and interviews are being scheduled for the summer session as well.
  • IAMA Theatre Company  is offering The One Day Plays—five plays conceived, written, rehearsed and performed for a live audience within 23-hour period, written, directed and performed by members of IAMA Theatre company, including co-artistic director Katie Lowes and guest performers Jake Choi, Kimrie Lewis, Artemis Pebdani, Baron Vaughn and more. Performs Apr 28 at Greenway Court Theatre (on the campus of Fairfax High School).

 

PREMIERES

  • Rubicon Theatre in Ventura continues the company’s 21st  “Coming of Age” season with the premiere of Women Beyond Borders, a play inspired by and loosely based on the journey of Lorraine Serena and a group of California-based artists who founded the non-profitWomen Beyond Borders. Written by Claire Bowman, Karyl Lynn Burns, Lauren Patten and Beverly Ward, with additional stories by Stephanie Coltrin and Sandra Tsing Loh, directed by Rubicon Artistic Associate Jenny Sullivan, the production features a rotating cast of five actors, including Tony Award-winner Lillias White, Emmy winners Susan Clark and Michael Learned, Golden Globe Award-winner Amanda McBroom and five-time Emmy nominee Meredith Baxter. Other announced performers are Kimiko Gelman, Donna Simone Johnson, Sandra Tsing Loh, Zilah Mendoza, Ulka Simone Mohanty and Jennifer Leigh Warren. Opens Apr 27.
  • Write Act Repertory Theatre is presenting the premiere Swing!, a musical that follows a WWII factory worker, whose passions evolve after her husband returns from war, written and composed by Michael Antin. Features a twelve-member ensemble directed by Corey Lynn Howe. Opens Apr 27 at Write Act Rep at The Brickhouse Theatre in North Hollywood.
  • El Portal Theatre in NoHo is hosting the premiere of the Troubadour Theater Company musical, Julius Weezer, Shakespeare’s story of Caesar mashed up with the funk-rock riffs of the band, Weezer, adapted, choreographed & directed by Matt Walker. The cast featuees such Troubie regulars as Matt Walker, Beth Kennedy, Rob Nagle, Rick Batalla, Joseph Leo Bwarie, Morgan Rusler, Mike Sulprizio, Cloie Wyatt Taylor, Victoria Hoffman, Matt Merchant, Dave C. Wright, Andy Robinson and Suzanne Jolie Narbonne. Opens May 10.
  • Anaheim’s Chance Theater presents the Orange County premiere of Kim Rosenstock’s, Tigers Be Still, a dark comedy centered around the infinitely optimistic but life-plagued SherryWickman, directed by Marya Mazor. Cast includes Piper Power (as Sherry) and three performers making their Chance debut, Steven Biggs, Joseph Bricker  and Erica Farnsworth. Opens May 11th at the Bette Aitken theater arts Center.

 

AROUND TOWN

  • Casa 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights is presenting Sister Act, the Musical, the Tony Award nominated show based on the 1992 Touchstone Pictures hit film of the same name, featuring music written by eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater and book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, directed by Rigo Tejeda, musical direction by Gabrielle Maldonado and choreographed Tania Possick. Jacquelin Lorraine Schofield stars in the dual roles of Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary, with a supporting cast of 20.  Opens Apr 19.
  • The Broad Stage continues its collaboration with Red Hen Press for their final event of the season, Red Hen Press: The Figure of Orpheus in Poetry and Performance. Poets selected by Poetry Society of America Director Alice Quinn will perform contemporary poems on the Orphic theme. Also included is a film clip from Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus and pianist Paul Barnes will perform The Orphée Suite for Piano, a transcription of Philip Glass’s symphony Orphée for solo piano. Performs Apr 28 in The Edye at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
  • Cal State Fullerton is presenting Heathers The Musical (based on the 1988 film), featuring book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, with direction by James R. Taulli at Cal State Fullerton’s Young Theatre (Apr 19-May 5) in the Young Theatre on campus.

 

SOLO MOJO 

  • The Santa Monica Playhouse Benefit Series is presenting two shows that feature solo artists: Willy’s Lil Virgin Queen—about a woman finding her voice and surviving trauma in a world of words, words, words—written and performed by Terra Taylor Knudson, directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson (opens Apr 27); and Tapping My Way To The Nuthouse—the travails of a burgeoning nutcase who takes a multi-media dance journey through the insanity of showbiz, written, performed, and choreographed by Lynne Jassem (opens Apr 28).

 

THE THING IS

  • Director Peter Richards and cast members discuss a stage adaptation of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, starring Michael Trevino, Lola Kelly and Brian Wallace, opening Apr 27 at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica.
